The City of Kota Kinabalu - Sabah.

A busy city with a small town atmosphere. Affectionately known as simply KK, the longer you spend here the more the place grows on you.

With the exception of licorice allsorts and tetley tea bags you can buy or find everything you need here.

Overlooking the South China Sea and the beautiful tropical islands and virgin rainforest of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park the city sits within the backdrop of the Crocker Range and Mount Kinabalu, one could not wish for superior visual variety.

Previously named Jesselton, it was flattened in WWII by the allied forces pushing out the Japanese, in 1963 the city was rebuilt and named Kota Kinabalu.

KK is compact, easy to orientate (once you see the map) and you can walk to pretty much everywhere, although taxi's are very cheap, generally they charge a set price and don't make it up, however its advisable to check the fee before setting off to avoid any misunderstanding.

Please click here for a city map.

The International airport is conveniently located just 7km south west of the city centre. A taxi ride from the city costs 20RM (£3.00) if you're taking a taxi from the airport to the city you must purchase a prepaid taxi coupon. Between midnight and 6am there is a 50% surcharge. Buses run frequently between the city and airport.

SHOPPING ...is superb, you can find all the usual fakes but genuine named brands can also be purchased at very affordable prices, take a look on the 4th floor of the Centerpoint Shopping Centre for Diesel, BUM Equipment, NIKE, MNG and many others.

For the girls KK is shoe and jewellery heaven !! There are many new shopping centres being built around KK, when completed in 2008, the RM$1B 1 Borneo Hypermall will be the biggest shopping precinct on the island of Borneo.

Most tour operators are based in the Wisma Sabah building, many are reputable but just as many are unscrupulous.
Should you wish us to recommend an operator please contact us with your desired destination and we'll endeavour to point you in the right direction.
